2018 Brought some heavy hitters as far as comic book movies go. While much of my attention was drawn to these superheroes, I would like to shine a spotlight on my favorites who may have flown under the radar to many film fans. Let’s jump into it:

Deadpool 2

Okay, well I needed to include at least one superhero movie, and this one was a big standout. Showing my we still need R rated comic book movies, Deadpool 2 is unapologetically gratuitous in a very welcoming way. We said hello (and goodbye) to many new characters, and it really had be laughing my face off. Not to mention it brought a fantastic Colossus vs Juggernaut fight for all of us fan boys.

Black Panther

Yes, another superhero movie, but I feel like it’s an important one. There was a lot of pressure on this to be great, and it did not disappoint. T’Challa is compelling and brings heart to the much loved character, but with a supporting cast so well developed, it made the titular Black Panther look super dull in comparison. I mean, Okoye kinda stole the show in every single scene. After it ended I was definitely itching to see more of her in infinity war.

Avengers: Infinity War

Okay, there is no way I could not include this. Yes, I was happy to see Okoye again, but I did not expect Thanos to be my new favorite part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Possibly the most ambitious movie ever made, Infinity war truly made an impact, and the world will never be the same afterwards. But I guess that’s 3 superhero movies now and I swear that’s not what this is about.

A Quiet Place

See? No superheros in this one. I’m not usually one for horror movies, but this was a gripping story about a family’s struggle in a land of terrifying blind creatures. The adults focus solely on surviving and forget to live, and the children keep trying live and frankly, that makes it hard for them to survive. A fantastic modern monster movie.

Incredibles 2

No apologizing here. I just love superhero movies. Pixar managed to make a sequel to the greatest Disney movie ever and make it just as good as the first. That is impressive. Each character had their time to shine in this family friendly movie that not once talks down to it’s audience.
